German Antique Furniture: Charm and Craftsmanship in One

When many people think of German antique furniture, the first thing that comes to mind are antique clocks. This is a fairly accurate assumption, as Germany is famous for their various timepieces. Cuckoo clocks were actually invented in the Black Forest region of Germany in 1737 and are still made there to this day. This movement eventually expanded from Germany into Scandinavia and still influences many of today's furniture designers.

Another notable period was the Jugendstil period of furniture design. This era was prominent in the 19th and 20th centuries and was quite similar to the Art Nouveau movement in other countries. The Jugendstil movement quickly spread from Germany to other areas of Europe such as Belgium, France and Austria. The furniture made during this time featured prominent curves and lines, and was often inspired by Japanese artwork. The look was sparse yet compelling and definitely like nothing seen before.
